A powerful drama based on the true-life testimonies of children who experienced the “kindertransport” refugee programme during World War II.
Opening shortly before the outbreak of WWII, Helga sends her nine-year-old daughter Eva from Hamburg to Britain using the kindertransport mission which saw 10,000 Jewish children evacuated from Nazi Europe. Eva is taken in and raised by a well-meaning English woman in Manchester and eventually learns to adapt to her new life and identity.
Set in the 1980s and 1940s the play moves seamlessly between present time and memory, as the consequences of Eva's painful childhood loss play out many years later, and we discover how these continue to cast a shadow that somehow needs to be faced.
A moving and thought-provoking play about mothers, daughters and the powerful need for reconciliation.
Kindertransport tells a captivating story of survival and building a new life, and which strikingly resonates with current events facing the world today.
