‘Breaking the Code’

The play tells the story of Alan Turing, a brilliant mathematician, who devised the means of cracking the German Enigma code which helped win World War II. He also “broke the code” by being unapologetically homosexual at a time when homosexuality was illegal in Great Britain. He is now recognised as being one of the founding fathers of the digital age. The play tells the story of his life and his battle against the norm. The play switches between various years from 1929 to 1954.
The Rehearsals - Wednesdays (7.30-10pm), Fridays (7.30-10pm) and Sundays (12-4pm) – full rehearsal schedule will be issued once the play has been cast.
The production will be directed by CADOS’s Head of Artistic, Mark Jones. This will be Mark’s 9th production at Chorley Little Theatre, following on from ‘Blood Brothers’, ‘Oliver Twist’ and ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’.
Please note the age ranges for the part are strict! There is no preparation required pre-audition – just turn up! Audition pieces will be handed out on the day.
Alan Turing (M): (age 35-55) – the key role, appears throughout the play – never leaving the stage. Plays Turing from 17 to 41; will require someone with exceptional acting ability and with the experience of having played large dramatic roles.
Ross (M): (age 25-40) – the detective sergeant who starts by investigating the burglary at Turing’s house and finishes by uncovering Turing’s homosexuality. Requires actor with experience of playing dramatic roles.
Morcom (M): (age 17-20) Turing’s childhood school friend. Appears in only one scene but has a key influence on Turing’s life. No previous acting experience required for this role.
Sara Turing (F): (age 35-50) – The fiercely loyal yet nagging mother of Alan Turing, who is the only one who refuses to believe his homosexuality or his alleged suicide. This part calls for someone to ‘age up’ playing Mrs Turing from 40ish to 70ish. Requires actress with experience of playing dramatic roles.
Ron (M): (age 20-30) – Turing’s lover, Ron is a young mancunian, on the make, plays a key role in telling the police of their relationship.
Dilly Knox (M): (age 55-70) – The Chief Cryptographer at Bletchley Park, Turing’s mentor. Dilly protects Alan, by advising him to be cautious about his behaviour and how it would be viewed by the government. Requires an actor with presence and gravitas.

It is hoped junior dancers will be able to double up as Dwarves, so this includes acting auditions. Dwarves only appear in second half and only have one big dialogue scene. Minimum age 8 years old.

Please note that all lead characters (apart from Dwarves) are for actors aged over 16. Decisions on sex of performers may depend on who auditions. Please bring a backing track for a song of your choice

Traditional panto full of jokes and slapstick. Good comic timing is required and an ability to improvise (even if just in rehearsal) is helpful but not essential. Singing and dancing is needed for all main parts. Rehearsals will be Mon/Weds/Fri/Sun from end of October, with readthroughs/workshops on Mondays (and days tbc) through Sept/Oct. Dancing will be Tuesdays and days tbc
Snow White F Teenage girl, the heroine of our story. Strong-willed, she loves her father but is hated by her stepmother for being very lovely
Dame Flagella M The Dame! She runs the royal household
Hodgit M/F Oddjob person around the castle. Half of the slapstick comedy duo
Bodgit M/F Other half of the slapstick comedy duo
Queen Slytherina F Snow White’s wicked stepmother. Must get everyone booing and be able to banter with the audience
The Mirror M/F Mainly in scenes with the Queen but needs good comic timing and physicality. A sarcastic, world-weary presence.
Prince Kevin M/F The Prince traveling abroad on his gap year
Consort Arnold M/F The Prince’s travelling companion
Chamberlain M The King’s right-hand man and castle boss. Shares comic scenes with Dame
Sheryl F The Chamberlain’s obedient and efficient assistant. Very on-the-ball and attentive to what's going on.
King Copernicus M Snow White’s father, often in a daydream and absent-minded. Not a big role, but needs to show some presence in the second half. No singing.
Jester M The court jester, loons about on stage so needs good physical presence
Frank M The dim, human-size dwarf
Dwarfs M & F Six dwarves, require comic timing and banter

Back To The 80s
Performance dates: Wednesday 17th - Saturday 20th July (7.30pm, plus Saturday matinee)
Audition: 1pm, Saturday 11th May 2013 - Chorley Little Theatre
This Chorley Youth Theatre production is a fun, lively and irreverent musical set in an American high school in the 1980s. Full of knowing jokes, it’s packed with 80s songs performed by the cast with a live band. The parts of the children have already been cast and CYT need three adult performers - two to play school teachers, and one to play an adult version of the lead character.
The production follows in the tradition of high-quality productions of Honk!, Annie, and the multi NODA-award nominated Peter Pan (with largely the same crew). Rehearsals will be from mid-May, although you would not be required at every one.
Please bring a prepared song with a track - or you can sing “Dancing On The Ceiling” (men) and “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” (women)
MISS SHEENA BRANNIGAN
The only female teacher at the school to be seen. She is around 30, and is the Senior Students Co-ordinator. On the surface in front of classes of children she seems very reserved, very friendly and slightly conservative. What they don't know is that at 18 she posed for a lad’s mag. She has an on-again/off-again relationship with Mr Cocker.

MR STEVIE COCKER
The Deputy Principal and maths teacher at William Ocean High School. He is one of only two teachers who are in the show. Stevie sees a future together with Sheena, but has major issues when he discovers he is dating a former centerfold (even though she is now a respectable, conservative English teacher.) Stevie has problems with erasing the image of Sheena's prior modelling from his mind.

COREY PALMER SR.
The narrator of the show. Corey Sr. is pushing 30, living in the year 2000, and reminiscing about the 80's (his school days), and his love for Tiffany Houston. He is similar to the older voice-over of Kevin Arnold from the Wonder Years. He is able to move the story along, comment on action as it is happening, and even provide the internal thoughts of his younger version (Corey Palmer Jr.) in the midst the action.

‘Shakers’ is a funny observational play set in a trendy 1980’s cocktail bar. It has four female characters who take on the roles of the cocktail waitresses as well as the range of clientele who frequent the bar from the check-out girls to the chinless wonders, from the yuppies to the local lads. We are given a wickedly funny glimpse of this world by the four long-suffering waitresses, offering a fascinating view of the reality that lurks behind the plastic palms and Pina Coladas.
In the play a lot of different issues are tackled and each individual character has their own story to tell. This is a fantastic opportunity for experienced female actresses who want to take on a challenging, exciting role.
Characterisation and comedy timing are needed to play these parts
Having been a long standing member of CADOS, I am very excited and passionate about this play as this was the first ever play I acted in (many moons ago!) so has a bit of a soft spot with me, and I know with the right cast and commitment this will be a fantastic production.

The Hound of the Baskervilles

Based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novel, my version of ‘Hound of the Baskervilles’ is set in modern day – in June 2013. The play follows the main plot line of the original novel but has a modern twist. Opening at the end of their last adventure, Sherlock is angry with John Watson who has announced that he is to be married and therefore will no longer be able to partner him on future adventures. Sherlock descends into a drug fuelled existence until his next client – Dr Mortimer - enters 221B Baker Street. Mortimer informs Holmes about the recent death of Charles Baskerville who died at the hands of a ‘gigantic’ hound. Mortimer insists a supernatural cause for the death. Sherlock dismisses this and insists that it will be a natural cause. Mortimer will escort Henry Baskerville, the heir to Baskerville Hall, back to his new home. Mortimer served with Watson in the gulf. Sherlock uses their friendship to entice Watson onto this new case. In taking the case Sherlock dispatches Watson to look after Henry on his journey to Baskerville Hall.
At the house, we meet the Barrymores and the Stapletons; and Watson is confronted with strange supernatural ‘goings-on’. Sherlock appears at the house and after initial investigations insists on going out onto the moor to find the hound.... which he does .... and suffers a temporary mental breakdown on seeing the ‘gigantic’ hound! His very existence is challenged as he faces the prospect of having to accept that the supernatural may be at play. Slowly he recovers his determination to disprove the supernatural notion. In true Sherlock style he wraps up the case with the conclusion that it is not a ‘Hound’, but greed and money which are gigantic! At the end he returns to 221B, makes his peace with Watson by giving his blessing to his future wedding, but then returns to a drug fuelled state which reveals the figure of Professor James Moriarty, who has haunted him throughout the case. This is a play about beliefs being challenged. A question of the supernatural versus the natural; about love and loss; about the challenge of the norm and most of all about what is real and what is imaginary. Elementary!!
This will be my 8th production for CADOS, following on from Memory of Water, Oliver Twist (both 2011) Blood Brothers (2010), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2007), Amadeus, Half a Sixpence (both 2005) and Great Expectations (2004).

‘There are no small parts; only small actors’ as the saying goes! Most of the roles (apart from Holmes and Watson) are small in terms of time on stage but are key! In this play, character is everything! So even though a role might be only in one or two scenes it is essential that they are good actors who can build a role with the director. Small role, but a great opportunity.....
