SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE FINAL PROBLEM AUDITIONS

Based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle short stories ‘Scandal in Bohemia’ and ‘The Final Problem’.
This production is a follow-up (not a sequel) to the 2013 production of ‘Hound of the Baskervilles’. It contains many of the same characters and has a similar feel in regards to the humour and style. The play is set in 2015. The world needs Sherlock Holmes now, more than ever! The first half of the play (based on ‘Scandal in Bohemia’) introduces us to the modern courtesan – Irene Adler. Adler owns a high class escort club in London and knows some very powerful people. She becomes concerned about her own welfare, and therefore records the ‘pillow talk’ she has had with two of her clients. She then sends a message to the British government warning them that she will publish the recordings on Facebook if anyone tries to harm her. A central figure within her majesty’s secret service, Mycroft Holmes, visits 221b Baker Street to employ his brother Sherlock to retrieve the phone owned by Miss Adler, which contains the two recordings. Sherlock retrieves the recordings. However, both Mycroft and Sherlock from the beginning are aware that there is a greater force behind Miss Adler’s actions.
The second half of the play (based on ‘The Final Problem’) sees Sherlock attacked, shot at and hunted down. Soon the hunted becomes the hunter as he, along with Watson, Mycroft and Lestrade unlock a web of evil and makes connections between all the terror cells within the world. Eventually we discover that behind all the evil is Sherlock’s arch-enemy - Professor James Moriarty. In tracking down and destroying Moriarty, Sherlock will eliminate evil from the world. Achieving this however, may require the ultimate sacrifice. Throughout the play we meet a number of key characters who warn Sherlock and open him up to a world of sex, intrigue and mortality. The play deals with a number of key adult issues which affect the current world we live in.
This will be my 10th production for CADOS, following on from ‘Breaking the Code’ (2014); ‘Hound of the Baskervilles’ (2013), ‘Memory of Water’; ‘Oliver Twist’ (both 2011), ‘Blood Brothers’ (2010) ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ (2007), ‘Amadeus’, ‘Half a Sixpence’ (both 2005) and ‘Great Expectations’ (2004).
The Auditions - Interested?
There is no preparation to do before the audition – audition pieces will be handed out on the day.
As this is a follow-up to my 2013 production I have invited a number of people to re-enact their roles – these are:-
Sherlock Holmes – Dave Reid; Mrs Hudson – Siobhan Edge; Inspector Lestrade – Kath Townsend
However, we are looking for a new Watson, as our previous one has emigrated to the far east. Most of these roles (apart from Watson) are small in terms of time on stage but are very key to the overall success of this production! In this play, character is everything! I am looking for people that are good actors and can work with a director to build a convincing character.

John Watson M 20-30
Appears in 9 of the 14 scenes. He constantly bickers with Sherlock – they are like an old married couple. It is Watson who keeps Holmes grounded. Since ‘Hound’ he has married Miss Morstan and set-up in private practice as a GP. Watson teaches Holmes all about social media and comes back to help him to solve this final case. I am looking for a strong actor with recent stage experience. The age range is strict.
Mycroft Holmes M 45+
Appears in 3 key scenes. Mycroft is Sherlock’s older brother who works at the centre of the UK’s secret service. He employs Sherlock to work on the case, and whilst there is a healthy dis-regard for each other, by the end we witness the true love that exists between the brothers. The age limit is strict, ideally would prefer someone in their mid-50s but accept that someone younger could pull off this age range as well.
Irene Adler F 20-40ish
Appears in 3 key scenes. She is the ‘femme fatale’, a modern courtesan who mixes with the worlds rich and powerful. She is sensual and always in control. For this part I need an experienced actress who is not afraid to describe adult themes.
The Woman in a Niqab F 20-30
She appears in one key scene with Sherlock, where she warns him of the dangers of mixing with Irene Adler. She has worked as one of Adler’s girls, but one night she refuses the perverted request of one of her clients. Her defiance leads to her brother being killed. This is a major scene in the play. The actor will undertake the whole scene in a Niqab. This part could be doubled up with either Elena or Irene Adler.
Elena F 20-30
Two key scenes. She is one of Adler’s girls at the ‘gentleman’s club’. She acts as host to Sherlock and Watson who appear at the club in disguise. In this scene the character wears lingerie (no nudity though). In the second scene she appears with Sherlock in a key piece where she tries to tip Sherlock off as to who the men in the recordings are. She is shot before she can reveal their names. This part requires the ability to perform with a Czech accent.
Moriarty M 45+
Appears in one scene – the key scene towards the end of the play. Moriarty is the villain and appears in the verbal duel with Sherlock at the Reichenbach falls. Needs a strong actor to undertake this role. The age limit is strict, ideally would prefer someone in their mid-50s but accept that someone younger could pull off this age range as well.
Banker M any but at least 25+
Appears in the prologue with Sherlock, a short scene in which Sherlock discovers the banker’s plot. This part can also be doubled up with the ‘masked man’ (non-speaking), who appears in two other scenes.
