Author Michael (son of Ray) Cooney obviously felt that he could write a faster, funnier and more complicated plot than his dad’s Run for Your Wife…. and he did just that with Cash on Delivery.
The play opens with our anti hero, Eric Swan, (Brian Clarke) recognising that his life of defrauding the DSS has become too complicated and decides to kill off his fictitious benefit claiming lodgers.
After reporting the “death” of claimant Norman Bassett (a Chorley lumberjack) DSS Inspector, Mr Jenkins, (Darren Houghton) makes an unexpected home visit greeted by the real Norman Bassett, (Barry Callander), an innocent shoe salesman and the only bona fide lodger who very quickly gets caught up in the deceit whilst trying to help his landlord out.
Sally Chessington, (Kath Townsend), a family crisis department worker, arrives to offer support to the recently bereaved and, ever helpful, totally misunderstands the situation and returns with Mr Forbright (Robert Talbot) the local undertaker.
Linda Swan (Karen Thompson) oblivious to her husband’s creative behaviour is very concerned about the girdles, wigs, stockings etc she has found secreted about the house, all part of an NHS scam Eric runs with his uncle George, (Ben Mayo) but Linda thinks her husband is a transvestite and enlists the help of Dr Chapman, (David Hartley) a marriage guidance counsellor.
Later on enter the formidable Ms Cowper (Kim Brookfield) from DSS & Norman’s fiancée Brenda (Brenda Bartlett).
Confused? You won’t be, the plot is convoluted and clever and in the very capable hands of the NODA award winning team that brought you ‘Allo ‘Allo & 'Run For Your Wife' is very funny. Forget the credit crunch for a couple of hours, Cash on Delivery runs from Monday 15th September to 20th (inc).
